Gevorg Grigoryan is an Armenian bass and soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Renowned for his deep, expressive voice and commanding stage presence, he has performed leading roles across major opera houses and international festivals, including Teatro Real in Madrid, Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, and numerous productions throughout Russia and France.
His repertoire includes iconic bass roles such as Don Pasquale (Don Pasquale), Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Zacharia (Nabucco), Ramfis (Aida), Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Méphistophélès (La Damnation de Faust), Zoroastro (Orlando), Colline (La Bohème), and Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). In 2024, he performed both Sachs and Pogner in Wagner’s Meistersinger at Teatro Real under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado and direction of Laurent Pelly.
He has been recognized with numerous international awards, including the Golden Sofit Award for Best Male Role as Orest in Elektra, Grand Prix at the Toulouse International Competition, and first prizes in Béziers, Bourgogne, and Moscow. He was also awarded a Special Jury Prize at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition.
Grigoryan has collaborated with acclaimed conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Dmitri Jurowski, Paul McCreesh, and Eliahu Inbal, and has worked under stage directors including Terry Gilliam, Laurent Pelly, and Tatjana Gürbaca. He is also an accomplished concert soloist, with a repertoire that includes the Requiem by Verdi and Mozart, Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, and Schubert’s Mass in C.
A graduate of the Rostov State Rachmaninov Conservatory, Grigoryan pursued further studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the CNIPAL program in Marseille. His operatic debut came with the Rostov State Opera, followed by engagements with the Lipetsk Philharmonic and a successful season at Vlaamse Opera. He became a soloist with the Mariinsky Theatre’s North Ossetia branch in 2014 and joined the St. Petersburg ensemble in 2023.
In addition to his musical training, Gevorg Grigoryan holds a degree in foreign languages from Tibilov State University in Tskhinval, South Ossetia. Before pursuing opera professionally, he worked as an English teacher for senior school students and as a translator for the Red Cross, supporting families affected by armed conflict in the region.
